MAY, TIME OF LOVE

Late evening, on the first of May
the twilit May - the time of love...

Do you know these verses? They were written by Karel Hynek Mácha, a Czech writer who was a typical representative of Romanticism. In 1836, when the poem was published, people didn't like it, not even a little bit. And now, decades after his death, this work is a classic work of romanticism and everyone knows K. H. Mácha.

His influence on our nation is so huge, that every year on the 1st May, people visit his statue on Petřín hill in Prague , because he became the symbol of love. (However, this isn't the only memorial made for his honor, near Oloumoučany (in Blansko area) is another monument with his name written on it and with excertps from May).

1st May

Another habit that Czechs do on this day is kissing under the blooming cherry-trees (or nowadays under any blooming tree). In the past this habit meant that the wedding would come soon and also that the girl will be beautiful forever (or at least for another year). Nowadays, we believe only in the second option-eternal beauty.
