30th April

British have Guy Fawkes Night, Germans have Walpurgis Night (Walpurgisnacht)and we have 'Burning Witches' (Pálení Čarodějnic). It is a Bonfire Night in our country. Nowadays, people burn bonfires, drink beer, eat sausages, watch firework and have fun, but this days has a rich history!

History of 30th April

There are few theories abou this feast:

  • Origins of this celebration is connected with Pagans who celebrated arrival of Spring and made a doll stuffed with straw and burnt it. This doll symbolized The Death (Morana).
  • This night is also called Filipo-Jakubská noc (Philip-Jacob night), because the nameday of these apostels were set on 1st May and Christians secretly celebrated this day pretending they are celebrating pagan feast.
  • Some sources claim that a satanic holiday is on 30th April and this night was the greatest sabbath of Sabatic cults.
  • Without doubt, people believed that this night was magical.

These days people spend with their friends and families and have a reason to be together and make bonfire, which reminds me that the tradition of bonfires was probably originally set as a protection from witches.

Now you know why, what and where, so if you come to the Czech Republic in April, remember this day and be sure to go out.
